CITY OF DETROIT DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS TO BEGIN COLLECTING YARD WASTE APRIL 23 Spring/Summer Hours Also Begin at Drop-off Locations
4/19/2012 - Beginning the week of April 23, the City of Detroit Department of Public Works will begin curbside collection of yard waste. Residents can place grass clippings, leaves, and small twigs in biodegradable paper bags on the same day their weekly refuse is collected.
Because of the volume of yard waste, DPW crews may not collect yard waste on the specified day or week that bags are placed at curbside. Residents may leave their bags at curbside until collected and should not be ticketed. If yard waste must be disposed of immediately, residents are encouraged to take their yard waste to any of the five DPW drop-off locations.
Yard waste collection will continue through the first week in December (weather permitting).
All yard waste must be placed at the curb at least six feet from the Courville container in biodegradable paper bags or a personal garbage can. DPW will not collect yard waste in plastic bags. Branches up to 4 feet in length and less than 2 inches in diameter should be bundled but not tied.
In addition, DPW will switch to spring/summer hours of 10:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. on April 23 at its four drop-off locations. A fifth location, J. Fons Transfer Station at 6451 E. McNichols, is open weekdays from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Residents with proper identification may use the drop-off locations to discard bulk items, yard waste and recyclable items.
These hours are in effect from now through the end of October for the drop-off sites:
