11/2/2009 - DETROIT COMES TOGETHER FOR A SUCCESSFUL ANGELS' NIGHT VOLUNTEERS KEY TO KEEPING ARSONISTS AT BAY
Mayor Dave Bing today credited the efforts of Detroit Fire, Homeland
Security and Police Departments; municipal departments; and tens of
thousands of volunteers who joined together over the three-night
Angels’ Night weekend to successfully patrol the city and deter
would-be arsonists.

10/26/2009 - MAYOR ANNOUNCES GAINS IN HOMICIDE NUMBERS
The trend of skyrocketing homicides in the city of Detroit established
during the first half of 2009 has been reversed and the Detroit Police
Department's closure rate for homicide cases has doubled in the three
months since Mayor Dave Bing appointed Warren Evans Chief of Police,
the Mayor announced today.

9/30/2009 - MAYOR DAVE BING KICKS OFF 2009 ANGELS’ NIGHT ANTI-ARSON CAMPAIGN Encourages Citizens to “Watch Their Block”
Mayor Dave Bing, along with Fire Commissioner James Mack, Police Chief
Warren Evans and a host of business and community leaders, kicked off
the 2009 Angels’ Night Anti-Arson campaign. This year’s theme, “Watch
Your Block,” encourages residents throughout the city to keep an eye on
vacant structures and foreclosed homes on their block to help make
Angels' Night 2009 a success.
9/11/2009 - MAYOR BING APPOINTS FIRE COMMISSIONER
Today,
Mayor Bing announced the appointment of James W. Mack Jr. as Fire
Commissioner for the City of Detroit. Mack is a 30-year veteran of the
Detroit Fire Department, serving most recently as 2nd Deputy Fire
Commissioner for seven years.
AUGUST 20098/28/2009 - MAYOR DAVE BING ISSUES THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT REGARDING LAYOFFS
“Today
is the day that I had hoped there would be some good news regarding
union negotiations. However, while there still remains much to be
agreed upon, we continue to stare a fiscal crisis in the face.
Effective today, there are 205 layoffs of city employees from various
departments, not including Police/Fire, Water, or DDOT. The proposed
changes for DDOT remain unconfirmed, and service continues until
further notice. Our public hearings ended last night, and we will now
take that data and the citizens concerns as we determine what changes
can and should be implemented with minimal impact to ridership.”
JULY 20097/14/2009 - CITY OF DETROIT ANNOUNCES SUCCESSFUL FINANCING Restructuring to Save $11.5 Million Annually
Mayor
Dave Bing announced today that the City of Detroit has completed a
$305-million restructuring of the City’s sewage system revenue bonds,
saving customers an estimated $11.5 million per year.

First Show Will Reflect Mayor’s First 50 Days In Office
Mayor
Dave Bing will debut a new television show, “From the Mayor’s Office,”
on Tuesday, June 30 on the City of Detroit’s government access station,
Channel 10. “This is a perfect opportunity for citizens in Detroit to
receive a new, fresh view of city government,” said Mayor Bing.
6/5/2009 - MAYOR BING ANNOUNCES SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR UP TO $10,000 FOR WORKERS LAID OFF IN LAST 18 MONTHS
In
the midst of the economic troubles facing the area, there's some good
news to help give laid off workers a chance at a new career. Mayor Dave
Bing and the City of Detroit Workforce Development Department (DWDD)
have teamed up with the Governor’s No Worker Left Behind Program (NWLB)
to offer laid-off workers up to $10,000 in free tuition over two years.
Through this scholarship opportunity, those laid off in the past 18
months may enroll in high-demand, high growth occupational training
that will likely lead to a new career.

In
keeping with his campaign promise, Mayor Dave Bing announced members of
his Cabinet and Crisis Turnaround Teams today during a press conference
in the Mayor’s Office. This is the first of several press briefings
that the Mayor intends to hold to keep the citizens of Detroit informed
on his turnaround process. Mayor Bing introduced six members of his
Cabinet and nearly 30 members of his Crisis Turnaround team.
